The ETC solar water heaters have beds of tubes. The construction of the tubes is such that the transparent glass tubes enclose the metal absorber tubes inside. Between them is a vacuum to prevent heat loss. The sunlight or solar energy is absorbed by the metal absorber of the tube. As the water runs inside the tube, the heat from the outer wall gets transferred to the water inside the tube. And hence, the water gets heated.
